Nose Shaping - Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping, enhances the shape and
appearance of the nose, and thus can significantly improve self-confidence.
The best candidates for the nose reshaping procedure are people who
want improvement but also have realistic expectations.
At the time of your initial consultation, a thorough examination
of your nose and all your facial features will be performed. This
will identify any cosmetic and functional issues that are of concern
to you. It is important that you inform us about any history of
trauma or surgery to your nose or if you have any seasonal allergies
or problems with your breathing. All of these are important factors
when we discuss all the surgical options with you.
Complications of rhinoplasty are infrequent and usually minor and
include the possibility of infection,
bleeding, or a reaction to the anesthetic. The rhinoplasty surgery
is frequently performed using the "closed" technique, where
incisions are placed inside the nose and therefore are not visible.
Occasionally, it may be necessary to use the "open" approach;
this is done with a small incision at the base, or columella, of
the nose. This technique allows for better visualization of certain
internal structures of the nose, and the small scar is virtually
invisible.
For the first 7-10 days following the procedure, you should expect
a fair amount of swelling and puffiness around the nose and eyes.
This swelling can be reduced significantly by keeping your head elevated
and applying cold compresses around the nose and eyes. There will
be a splint on top of your nose and possibly a soft silicone rubber
splint in your nose. These are usually
removed a few days later. You will be able to
return to your normal daily activities after the first week, but
it is important to avoid strenuous activities for at least 4 weeks,
as this will delay your healing and possibly cause bleeding.
